All eyes were on Brazil when they hosted the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. Brazil, like other countries, is known for having a large population of stray animals, especially dogs. The outcome was favorable as 900 stray dogs were rescued from the streets just in time for the arrival of The Games. There is another kind-hearted soul belonging to a young gentleman by the name of Amarildo Silva. For the last year and a half, he has been crafting old tires into beds for stray animals in Brazil. He Started Two Years Ago With Old Tires
When Amarildo’s passion began approximately two years ago, he was looking for a way to make some extra income. He enjoyed creating handicrafts in his spare time from discarded items that were mostly thrown in the streets. Amarildo noticed stray dogs sleeping in discarded tires on the street and his imagination took over from there. He began to realize that if he used the tires to make pet beds, he would be supporting a cleaner environment and making some money at the same time.

Amarildo began collecting the tires he found in the streets, landfills and parking lots. He would take them home and store them in his yard until he was ready to use them. At the time this project began he was trying to figure out a way to combine his passion for creating things with a way to earn income. The discarded tires were easily available and he could provide a small cleanup service while collecting them. A tire that is not properly recycled can take up to a half a century to decompose. (3)

Once Amarildo collected enough old tires, he began to design the beds. Cutting back portions of the tires first to create the bases for the beds, he used his tools to shape and carve. Once the frame is created for the bed, he proceeds to wash and scrub the tires. This creates a clean surface for him to paint each of the tires. He uses bright colors and adds designs like bones and paw prints. Each bed has a nameplate for the dog who will enjoy the comfy bed.
When the base of the bed is shaped and painted, Amarildo goes to his sewing machine. Here he creates a custom cushion and a pillow for each bed so that the pet has a truly comfy place to lay. His goal is to make sure each pet who enjoys one of his beds feels like they have a luxurious bed, even if they are a stray animal. (4)
Making A Difference One Bed At A Time
What started out as a simple idea for Amarildo, has grown into a profitable business for this 23-year-old from Campina Grande, Brazil. He continues to create pet beds but is also expanding into colorful planters that can be used in garden spaces. Amarildo now runs Cãominhas Pets as a full-time business.
