If you haven’t read our How to Train Your Human (for dogs) post on Fourth of July Safety for dogs from celebrity pet trainer Harrison Forbes, you can find it here. It’s filled with tips to keep your dog safe and comfortable this holiday weekend.
Fourth of July Safety from PetFinder
ALWAYS keep fireworks out of reach of your dog. While the folks in the video below are obviously enjoying their dog’s antics, this situation could have ended badly for both humans and canine. Dogs and fireworks are not a good combination- for your safety and theirs.
THE ULTIMATE REAL MEAT TREAT ME PACKAGE
This is a great choice for those pups that are just too cute to say no to! Get a great deal on this package which includes every one of our wholesome and healthy freeze-dried real meat treats! Go and grab the dog treats you have in your house right now and look at the ingredients.
- High-fat picnic foods like potato chips, hot dogs, and desserts can create a serious case of digestive distress for your dog. Plus, those picnic staples like brownies, grapes, and onions can be toxic to your dog so make sure everyone knows not to share food with your dogs. You can leave bags of dog-safe treats like TREAT ME out for guests to share with your dog instead.
- It’s also a good idea to keep an eye out for environmental hazards when out with your dog during festivals, parades, and picnics. Lit cigarettes, dropped foods, broken bottles and even tennis ball bombs (yes, this is a serious threat) serve as hazards to your dog.
- Be aware of hot asphalt that could potentially burn sensitive paw pads, and always carry fresh drinking water for your dog during outings. Water that’s stored in a hot car in plastic bottles or jugs can become toxic, so bring a cooler or use BPA free metal or glass containers.
- Keep your dog’s collar on and make sure his ID tags are secured to the collar in case he gets loose. Dogs will run when afraid, and some will run when given the opportunity, such as when a gate is left open by visitors. If you haven’t gotten your dog microchipped, consider making an appointment ASAP for his safety.
Have fun and stay safe this Fourth of July.
