When nine year old Golden Lab Chile and her Shepherd mix puppy went for a stroll one afternoon, their family was oblivious to the pups’ adventure. But they soon figured out their dogs had left the yard when they saw them on the evening news.
While crossing a six-lane highway near the dogs’ home in New York, Chile was struck by a car, breaking her left front leg. Witnesses called authorities right away to alert them of the situation, but no one could get near Chile to help her.
Chile’s puppy went into five-star protective mode and circled her as she lay in the roadway, barking at anyone who came near. After lots of coaxing, police were able to scoop up Chile and her pup and transport them to the ASPCA hospital for treatment.
But Chile’s puppy was not keen on being captured by police. He led officers on a low-speed chase down the highway for over 45 minutes before he was finally captured.
Both dogs are now ok. Chile had surgery to repair her broken leg, and the puppy went home that same day without any injuries.

It’s truly amazing the level of dedication and bravery dogs show to those they love- including other dogs. Just like we’d do anything to protect our loved ones, our dogs feel the same fierce love that motivates them to face fear and danger head on during an emergency situation.
It’s comforting to know that our dogs share our deep connection to family. We truly are privileged that they consider us part of their pack and worthy of such deep love and devotion.
