How do I figure out how much food my dog needs?
The amount of food you feed a dog ultimately depends on their size, weight, age, build, metabolism, health and activity level. Be sure to do your research on the breed of dog you are parenting and also consult a veterinary professional if you ever have questions or concerns about the amount you are feeding your pup and if it’s an efficient amount.
For each individual dog, it’s not always easy to determine the exact amount they need daily, but there are a few things you can do on your own to help determine it and make sure your dog is satiated daily.
For instance, on most dog food packaging, there will be a general guide for feeding amounts based on size and weight (20 lbs = 1 1/4 cup, 60 lbs = 3 cups, 80 lbs = 3 2/3 cups, etc.). Be sure to always take a look at that guide and see how it compares to how much you feel your dog should be eating.
Along with determining the amount your dog needs daily, it is also important to note how many times a day you should be feeding your dog. The general recommendation is splitting the proper amount of food between 2 separate meals a day (more meals a day if they’re a puppy). It is also recommended to keep them on a schedule and feed them around the same times each day. Don’t worry, once their schedule becomes habit, your fur baby will likely help remind you when it’s meal time!
Another way to gauge whether or not your dog is getting the right amount of food daily is making sure they’re not overweight. You can follow this rule of thumb: when you look down at your dog and place or run your hands along their sides, you should be able to feel, but not see their ribs without pushing too hard and be able to see their waistline.
The quality of your dog’s food also makes a huge difference when it comes to keeping them as strong and healthy as possible. We strongly recommend giving your fur baby a raw, natural food diet.
Raw food tastes better to them and resonates best with their “wolf” heritage, regardless of their size. Its ingredients are simple, it is good for their health and helps keep their coats nice and shiny, it keeps them satisfied and happy and ultimately it saves you money – a pretty good perk!
For dog food in general, especially if you insist on sticking to bagged, kibble food, you want to be sure healthy meats are the highlight ingredient and that the food is not stuffed with additives or chemically created ingredients. You especially want to avoid grains and artificial flavorings. Just as you want to be careful with what foods you are putting in your body, so should you also be for your little furry companion.
