Teach Your Dog to Leave It in Four Easy Steps
Have you ever tried to teach your dog to “leave it”? It’s a skill that can save your dog from harm, and is easy to teach. Start with “leave it” with treats and pretty soon your dog will be “leaving it” with cigarette butts, antifreeze puddles, and even dropped grapes in the kitchen. Follow these easy steps and let us know how your dog is learning to “leave it”.
Even old dogs can learn new tricks. Send us a picture of your dog training with TruDog TREAT ME freeze dried treats and we’ll send you a coupon to use in our TruDog Store!
Step 1: Timing is everything.
Make sure your dog hasn’t eaten just before training, and pick a time when he’s not too tired or too energetic. Some dogs prefer to go on a walk to expell excess energy before they can focus properly.
Step 2: The right treats matter.
Use a high-value treat your dog craves like TruDog’s TREAT ME freeze-dreied real meat treats. You’ll need a good motivator to keep him interested.
Step 3: Learning in stages.
Begin by letting your dog sniff the treat, then place it on the floor where he can see it, but put your hand over it when he tries to take it. Give the command “leave it”.
Step 4: Advancing the command.
Only when your dog actively stops trying to get the treat does he earn the reward. You can advance to placing it on the floor without covering it, only giving the command, until he learns the expected behavior. Be sure to reward him well when he does it right
